Perennial cover crop works very nicely for planting in fertile soils and home garden beds. (Linseed)  Annual. Native to temperate Europe and Asia. Flax is pretty in the garden, with the added advantage of yielding a valuable fiber and seed crop. Homegrown organic linseed is very tasty as an addition to breads or cereals.

(Omega Flax, Golden Flax)  Cultivar producing seeds containing less mucilage and more omega-3 fatty acids (linolenic acid). The seed is shiny and golden, and the flowers are flax blue.

(White Flowered Sweet Clover)   Nitrogen fixing covercrop and medicinal herb used to thin blood and increase circulation, generally used in the form of a liniment for external application.

(Butterfly Pea, mfutafuta)  Vining tropical perennial native to Africa hardy to 30 degrees F.  May be grown as an annual in the temperate north.  Royal blue flowers occur on a tender and comely vine that can grow up to 15 feet.  This is a food plant and cover crop suitable for the tropics, with a flower so pretty that it also serves as a decorative hanging basket plant.

(Kidney Vetch, Ladies' Fingers) Herbaceous perennial nitrogen fixer native to Europe and flowering yellow to about 8 inches, hardy to 0 degrees F.  With its soft and pretty, globular flowers and forgiving, slightly downy foliage, Kidney Vetch is a natural choice as an emollient treatment for the skin, and has been used as such since time immemorial.
