We believe that the best way to support good health of friends and family is to get everybody out into the garden to do some work in the sunshine, then feed them up on fresh salads and vegetables that are the results of their own good labors.  Positive work in the out-of-doors helps keep our bodies fit, frees our minds, helps us sleep well at night, promotes happiness and serves mother nature.

Naturopathic doctors tell us that the best way to avoid cancer is to eat organic, freshly grown green leafy vegetables.  Our good sense tells us that the cheapest way to feed ourselves is by growing our own food, which is in and of itself great preventive medicine.  If health problems arise, or if injuries occur, we have learned that medicinal herbs work admirably well, are relatively free of side effects, and are a lot cheaper and easier on the environment than pharmaceutical drugs. Growing our own food and medicine is a pathway to walking on a beautiful planet, walking lightly, cheerfully and far!

We believe that by planting diversity we can really help the earth to heal.  That's why we are dedicated to bringing a wide array of plants into cultivation.  In the words of the Dalai Lama, "Diversity is both beautiful and necessary." 

Here at Horizon Herbs, we continuously clean and test myriads of seed batches, and these bright and viable seeds are then packaged by hand and made available by way of our paper catalog and on this website. Please rest assured that we understand ITS ALL ABOUT QUALITY.  On this farm we work within a continual cycle of seed growing and seed testing.  We perform standard germ tests (controlled conditions) as well as planting the seeds in a more realistic environment (in rows in our outdoor gardens, in flats or pots in our greenhouses and shade houses).  Our policy is LAST SEED IN FIRST SEED OUT.  That means we send you seed from our most recent harvest, in order to help assure your success. 

We put detailed growing instructions specific to the plant on each and every packet of seeds. Our catalog and books are designed to give you good advice on how to proceed, the basic information as well as the crucial nuances.  This website is full of information on the historical usage of herbs, detailed descriptions of native range and preferred habitat, germination and cultivation advice, all illustrated with pictures taken by us right here on our farm.  This includes many photos of the seeds germinating, which we know will be appreciated by many.  Ultimately, however, no written words or photographs will substitute for the lessons learned in the garden, where nature guides you with her loving hand.

Granted, there are variables involved in gardening, and things don't always go as planned.  Sometimes there are problems with germination, or the seedlings keel over after emerging, or some critter gets to them.  Often, these problems are caused by environmental factors that are beyond anyone's control.  We understand these challenges, are sympathetic, and if it helps at all, well, we deal with the same issues ourselves! Our best advice is to try growing new plants every year, keep the ones that do well for you, forget the ones that don't, and strive to make good use of that which grows well for you.  Also, we encourage everyone to plant perennials and trees every year.  The trees promote the greater good of all nature and will be enjoyed by the children of our children.
